Big jolt for Trinamool in Rajya Sabha, MP Sukhendu Roy submits resignation

Senior Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy resigned from both the Rajya Sabha and the All India Trinamool Congress on Monday. Announcing his decision from New Delhi, Roy cited the RG Kar rape-murder case and allegations of corruption as key reasons behind his departure. He stated that he had decided to leave the party following the RG Kar incident but chose to implement that decision at this stage. His resignation has also triggered political discussion regarding Rajya Sabha member Koel Mallik, although no official statement has been issued by her regarding any possible move.

Roy's resignation came on a day when an important meeting of the opposition INDIA Alliance was scheduled in New Delhi. Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee and the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had already arrived in the national capital to attend the meeting. According to available information, several opposition parties were expected to participate in the gathering. Roy's announcement before the commencement of the meeting generated significant political attention.

In recent months, Roy had become increasingly vocal about issues within his party, particularly following the controversy surrounding the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case. He publicly raised concerns regarding accountability and corruption and continued to express criticism after the change in government. Roy has already submitted his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee. In that communication, he reportedly referred to what he described as widespread corruption in sectors including education and healthcare.

Speaking from Delhi, Roy also indicated that he may withdraw from active politics in the future. He alleged that public anger over corruption had intensified and stated that the party's decline was linked to growing public dissatisfaction. At the same time, he maintained that not every Trinamool Congress leader was dishonest and claimed that honest leaders within the party had gradually become marginalized. He further stated that several of his concerns had accumulated over time before leading to his resignation.
