In a shocking turn of events from Bihar’s Darbhanga district, a minor boy who had been declared dead and cremated has returned home alive after 70 days, exposing major lapses in police handling and an unsettling case of mistaken identity.
The boy had gone missing on February 8 after he left home and did not return. His family filed a missing person report at the local police station and, days later, received a ransom call demanding Rs 45,000. In desperation, they managed to transfer Rs 5,000 to the kidnappers, but there was no further communication.
On February 28, a severely injured boy was found lying on railway tracks and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries on March 1. The family was called in to identify the body. Despite raising doubts and requesting a DNA test, they claimed police pressured them into accepting the body as their missing son. Under emotional distress and late-night circumstances, they agreed and cremated the body.
The incident triggered widespread outrage in Darbhanga. Locals staged protests with the deceased boy’s body and clashed with the police. Following the uproar, the Station House Officer (SHO) of the concerned police station was suspended for negligence, and the family received Rs 4 lakh compensation from the welfare department.
However, the unbelievable twist came when the actual missing boy appeared at the Darbhanga Civil Court, accompanied by a lawyer. He revealed that he had been abducted by unidentified men, forcibly taken across the border into Nepal, and kept in captivity. One day, when the captors mistakenly left a door unlocked, he managed to escape and, with the help of local residents, contacted his family through a video call.
The family, overwhelmed by the discovery, verified his identity and brought him back home. They have now informed authorities and expressed their willingness to return the financial aid they had received. Meanwhile, the real identity of the boy who was cremated remains unknown, prompting a separate investigation into the mishandling and tragic misidentification.
Police have confirmed the boy’s safe return and stated that detailed inquiries are underway to find those responsible for the abduction and to solve the case of the unidentified body.
