Bihar Govt schools adjust timings amid cold wave; Classes to run from 9:30 am to 4 pm

The Bihar Education Department has announced a revision in the school timings for government schools across the state due to the onset of cold weather. As per the directive issued by Dr. S. Siddharth, the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the Education Department, the new operational hours will be from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Prior to this change, schools operated from 8:50 AM to 4:30 PM. This new schedule aims to address the increasing cold temperatures and ensure the safety and comfort of students and staff.

Under the revised timings, the school day will begin at 9:30 AM, with the first class starting at 10:00 AM. Classes will be conducted in eight periods, with a 40-minute lunch break from 12:00 PM to 12:40 PM. The final bell will ring at 4:00 PM, signaling the end of the school day. During the interval between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM, activities such as checking students' uniforms, nails, and hair, along with general knowledge sessions, news reading, and discussions, will be conducted in the assembly. A loudspeaker will be used for these activities.

The revised schedule also includes specific instructions for schools during board exams. In cases where a board exam is taking place in any class, it is mandated that other classes continue their lessons as usual without being postponed. This ensures that academic activities do not suffer disruptions even when board exams are being conducted.

Additionally, schools will now focus on extracurricular and creative activities on Saturdays. For students in grades 1 to 8, "Bagless Saturday" will be implemented, promoting a day free from regular homework and focused on creative projects. These activities will include sports, arts, music, and dance sessions. After lunch, students will participate in events such as children’s parliament, and their projects and creative works will be showcased. These initiatives are aimed at providing a balanced approach to learning, combining academics with hands-on experiences.

The order also specifies measures to ensure the proper functioning of schools. Weak students will be seated in the front rows to receive extra attention from teachers. The principal will be responsible for preparing the routine based on teacher availability and ensuring its adherence. Teachers are expected to assign and check homework daily, and ensure that classrooms and school facilities, including kitchens and toilets, are maintained in a clean and hygienic state. The principal will oversee the cleanliness and regular inspection of the school premises.
