In Bihar's Araria district, Mohd. Haroon and Rehana, a couple residing in Ward Number Six of Pahira Panchayat, sold their one-and-a-half-year-old son, Guferan, for ₹9,000 due to financial difficulties stemming from an unpaid group loan. The couple had taken a loan of ₹50,000 from a local finance company, which led to increasing pressure from the loan agents as they struggled to keep up with the repayment installments.
The situation escalated as the loan agents reportedly harassed the couple for payments, ultimately leading them to a desperate decision. Unable to repay the loan and feeling overwhelmed by the financial burden, the parents resorted to selling their child as a last resort to alleviate their debts. This alarming case of child sale was first reported on social media, where it gained significant attention, prompting a swift response from local authorities.
Upon receiving reports about the sale, the Rani Ganj police, under the leadership of Station Chief Nirmal Kumar Yadavendu, initiated an investigation and registered a case. Police teams were dispatched to locate the child, who had reportedly been transferred to a buyer in Bangalore. The urgency of the situation compelled the authorities to act quickly in order to ensure the safety of the child.
The police located the child at the residence of the buyer, identified as Mohd. Arif from Dumaria Ward Number 10, and successfully recovered Guferan. Following the rescue, the police conducted necessary interrogations with the parents and the buyer to gather additional information regarding the circumstances of the sale. The recovered child has since been placed in the custody of the Child Welfare Committee in Araria for appropriate care and protection.
