Biplab Deb, part of BJP team, alleges 'no entry' at South Calcutta Law College

A four-member fact-finding team, formed by the BJP to investigate the recent gang rape at a law college in Kolkata, arrived in the city on Monday morning. The team, comprising former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with MPs Biplab Kumar Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra, is set to review the law and order situation in West Bengal following the horrific incident.

Upon their arrival at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Biplab Kumar Deb launched a strong critique of the state government. He stated that despite West Bengal being led by a woman chief minister, the state is witnessing a series of "ghastly incidents" in educational institutions. Deb emphasized that "women are not safe in West Bengal... even a law student is not safe," highlighting the vulnerability of women in the state.

The team's visit is a direct response to the gang rape of a law student at the South Calcutta Law College, an incident that has triggered widespread protests and political outrage. The BJP has consistently used the incident to attack the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, demanding the Chief Minister's resignation and accusing the administration of failing to protect its citizens.

During their visit, the fact-finding team encountered immediate obstacles. Biplab Kumar Deb alleged that the team was denied permission to visit the South Calcutta Law College, the site of the crime. Additionally, they were reportedly unable to secure an audience with the chief secretary, a meeting that would be crucial for their investigation. These denied requests suggest a potential lack of cooperation from state authorities.

The team's objective is to gather facts and details from all relevant parties, including the victim's family, if possible. They plan to interact with stakeholders and assess the security arrangements within the college and the overall law and order situation in the state. Following their on-ground assessment, the four-member team will compile a detailed report. This report will be submitted to BJP national president J.P. Nadda, who constituted the team, to inform the party's future course of action on the matter.
