Bishnupur Trinamool Congress MLA Dilip Mandal has approached the Calcutta High Court seeking legal protection amid fears of imminent arrest. On Friday, his lawyer mentioned the matter before the bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya, who permitted the petition to be formally filed. The move comes amid multiple FIRs registered against the MLA following allegations linked to post-election tensions in the state.
Police are also searching for Dilip Mandal after he reportedly became untraceable from his residence in Pailan in South 24 Parganas. According to officials, teams have been conducting search operations to trace the MLA since earlier raids were carried out at his property. His whereabouts were not immediately known at the time of reporting.
The controversy intensified after a video allegedly featuring Dilip Mandal circulated on social media following the Assembly election results. In the purported clip, the MLA was allegedly heard making threatening remarks and warning BJP workers. Multiple complaints were subsequently lodged against him in connection with the statements. The authenticity of the video has not been independently verified.
On May 14, police and RAF personnel conducted a search operation at Mandal’s residence in Pailan, triggering heavy activity in the area. During the operation, officers reportedly found several luxury items inside the property, including expensive vehicles, a swimming pool, elaborate wooden furnishings, swings and an artificial cave structure. Police teams continued monitoring the premises after the search operation.
Earlier on May 17, the state police task force and Diamond Harbour district police carried out raids in connection with a separate investigation involving the MLA’s son Arghya Mandal. He was arrested along with five others from the Bakkhali-Fraserganj area. Investigators alleged that firearms were recovered during the operation and accused the group of attempting to create unrest in the region.
