FIR filed against Mamata at Hare Street PS over communal remarks during poll campaign
The process of removing the Biswa Bangla Globe from Old Digha has begun as part of the state government's ongoing replacement of symbols associated with the previous administration. Work started on Friday to dismantle the large installation located near Gate No. 1 of Old Digha, days after the name of the Jagannath Dham complex in Digha was changed, with the word "Dham" being replaced by "Cultural Centre."
The Biswa Bangla logo was introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and became a prominent symbol used on government communications and public installations across the state. In Digha, a large globe-shaped structure carrying the Biswa Bangla emblem was installed as part of a beautification project in Old Digha. The surrounding park area was landscaped and illuminated with decorative lighting, making the installation a major attraction for visitors.
Over the years, the Biswa Bangla Globe became one of the most photographed landmarks in Digha. Tourists frequently visited the site to take photographs and selfies, while local businesses and residents regarded it as a prominent feature of the seaside town's redevelopment efforts. Similar Biswa Bangla installations of varying sizes remain present at different locations across Digha.
Sub-Divisional Officer of Contai, Pratik Ashok Dhumal, said the removal was being carried out following government instructions. He stated that the government has future development plans for the location and that the area will be redesigned and renovated in accordance with new guidelines. Bipradas Chattopadhyay, Joint Secretary of the Digha-Shankarpur Hoteliers' Association, said the new government had adopted the Ashoka Emblem as its official symbol and expressed hope that the emblem would be installed at the site.
