Reconstruction of crime scene in Kasba as probe intensifies in Kolkata college student rape case
Bangaon's Trinamool (TMC) leader and former candidate from Bangaon South Vidhansabha constituency, Alorani Sarkar, has been accused of holding Bangladeshi citizenship by BJP MLA Swapan Majumdar.
This accusation came after Alorani Sarkar challenged the result of the 2021 Assembly elections and approached the Calcutta High Court. The Division Bench of Justice Subrata Thaludar and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya dismissed Alorani Sarkar's application, stating that dual citizenship is not allowed in the Indian Constitution.
BJP MLA Swapan Majumdar further alleged that Alorani Sarkar may have links with the Bangladeshi terrorist organization Jamaat-ul-Islam. In response, Trinamool co-chairman of the Banggaon organizational district, Prasenjit Ghosh, questioned why BJP nominated Alorani Sarkar in 2016 if he held Bangladeshi citizenship. He also accused Swapan Mazumdar of being a drug peddler and demanded that he be declared a traitor.
The allegations of Alorani Sarkar's Bangladeshi citizenship have caused a stir in the political circles of West Bengal, especially since it is not allowed under the Indian Constitution. The case highlights the importance of verifying the citizenship of candidates before nominating them for elections.
