Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
Tensions escalated in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district after the BJP alleged that its candidate Rathindra Nath Bose was targeted in an attack on his convoy while returning from a campaign event. The party claimed that the incident occurred in the Sutkabari area, where vehicles in the cavalcade were allegedly pelted with sticks, bamboo poles, bricks, and stones, resulting in damage to cars and injuries to at least one party worker.
Bose described the incident as a “planned attack,” accusing workers of the All India Trinamool Congress of attempting to intimidate BJP supporters ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. He alleged that the ruling party was reacting to the BJP’s growing support in the region. Police officials said they reached the spot following the incident and have initiated an inquiry into the allegations.
The Trinamool Congress, however, denied any involvement in the clash, attributing the incident to local resentment over alleged deletions from voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision process. A local TMC leader claimed that the BJP candidate faced public anger and maintained that the party had no role in the attack. The incident comes amid heightened political tensions and repeated allegations of disruptions during campaigning in the state.
