The opposition alliance in Bihar, the Mahagathbandhan, has been hit by a major internal crisis just weeks before the state Assembly polls, with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) announcing its decision to quit the alliance and contest the elections independently. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to seize on this development, sharply attacking the opposition's top leadership and blaming the "arrogance" of Congress's Rahul Gandhi and RJD's Tejashwi Yadav for the collapse of the coalition.
BJP stated that the grand alliance had fallen apart due to the attitude of its senior leaders, adding, "Rahul and Tejashwi's arrogance is the real reason behind the breakup of the Mahagathbandhan. Bihar has been saved."
JMM general secretary Supriyo Bhattacharya confirmed the party's decision to go solo, announcing a list of 20 star campaigners led by JMM president and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The JMM plans to field candidates on at least six, and possibly up to ten, seats. Significantly, Bhattacharya also announced that the JMM would "reconsider" its current alliance with the Congress and RJD in Jharkhand after the Bihar elections, indicating the seriousness of the rift.
