The Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress, held its annual rally on Mayo Road today, marking its foundation day. Abhishek Banerjee, addressing the gathering, slammed the BJP over 'Bengal Bandh' saying "you have started it and we will end it in Delhi. If anti-rape law is not formed within 3 months, we will take the protest to Delhi".
He also announced a proposal to reserve 55 percent of the seats for girls in student council elections, emphasizing the party’s commitment to gender equality. He also called for a strict anti-rape law at the national level, stating that if necessary, the TMC would push for a private member’s bill to ensure its passage.
Abhishek highlighted the delay in justice, pointing out that despite the ongoing CBI investigation into the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, there has been little progress.
He also took the opportunity to criticize the BJP Nabanna Abhiyan, claiming it was not in pursuit of justice but rather to protect those who vandalized government property. Abhishek questioned why key figures like Sandip Ghosh had not been arrested yet in the RG tax case, demanding accountability from the CBI.
The rally, held amid the backdrop of political strife, saw Abhishek declaring that the justice movement would be taken to Delhi if necessary. He challenged BJP leaders to demand the resignation of Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh if they truly cared about women’s safety.
