BJP leader criticizes Trudeau for 'Punjabi Singer' label on Diljit Dosanjh

In a recent social media post, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sparked controversy by referring to Diljit Dosanjh as a 'Punjabi singer' during a surprise visit to the artist's concert venue in Toronto. Trudeau's post on X read, "Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a superpower. (sic)" This labeling drew swift criticism, notably from BJP National Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who accused Trudeau of engaging in deliberate wordplay to diminish Dosanjh's Indian identity. Sirsa retorted on social media, stating, "Let me correct this, Mr. Prime Minister- where one guy from INDIA can make history and sell out stadiums."

Dosanjh himself responded to the controversy, affirming Canada's strength in diversity but without addressing Trudeau's specific wording. He posted on X, "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came to check out history in the making: we sold out the Rogers Centre!" The incident has added strain to India-Canada relations, already tense due to past diplomatic disputes, including allegations of Canada providing refuge to Khalistani terrorists.
