Murshidabad accident toll rises to 5; CM orders action against negligent gateman
Police arrested BJP leader Varun Biswas in Newtown as part of the government's stated zero-tolerance policy against corruption after he was accused of illegally occupying an elderly woman's luxury flat and misappropriating approximately ₹16 lakh in rent. The complainant, Anita Banerjee, alleged that she had not received any rent since March 2019 and that Varun Biswas refused to vacate the flat after the lease expired. She also alleged that she continued to pay the flat's maintenance charges and municipal taxes from her own funds during this period.
The situation escalated on Thursday evening when Anita Banerjee visited the flat and an altercation broke out with Varun Biswas. Local residents gathered at the spot in support of the complainant and surrounded the BJP leader. As tensions increased, a large police contingent from Bidhannagar reached the location to bring the situation under control.
According to the information provided, members of the crowd threw eggs at Varun Biswas and physically assaulted him when police attempted to escort him from the premises. The information also states that Trinamool Congress leader Jayaprakash Majumdar was recently arrested in connection with similar allegations of flat encroachment and had also faced public anger.
