In a strong show of protest, BJP Mahila Morcha workers from Hooghly organizational district gheraoed Chunchura police station and submitted a memorandum demanding accountability over the alleged mishandling of a molestation and attempted kidnapping case involving a minor girl.
The protest was sparked by an incident that occurred two days ago during the Gajan festival. A minor girl, returning from a local temple, was allegedly molested and nearly abducted by a group of miscreants. Her cries alerted local residents, who intervened and managed to rescue her from the attackers.
The girl’s family promptly approached the Chunchura police station to file a complaint. However, what followed has shocked many. According to BJP Mahila Morcha, the police showed utter disregard for the gravity of the case. The father of the victim was reportedly sent home, while the mother and minor daughter were made to spend the night in the children's room at the station without any support or update on the case.
The BJP’s women’s wing accused the police of complete inaction despite a formal complaint. “Why did the police not visit the crime scene? Why was there no urgency shown to arrest the accused?” they questioned while protesting outside the station.
Senior BJP women leaders criticized the police for their "insensitive" attitude and demanded immediate suspension of the officers involved in the mishandling of the case. They also called for a full investigation into why a child protection case was not taken seriously at the first go.
The memorandum submitted by BJP Mahila Morcha sought justice for the minor, a fast-tracked investigation, and safety assurances for women and children in the area. The protest ended with warnings that if police apathy continues, a larger agitation would follow across the district.
