A young woman was allegedly gang-raped in Asansol’s Hirapur, with police taking cognizance of the case on February 14 and registering an FIR at the women’s police station. Despite 48 hours passing, no arrests had been made, prompting protests by BJP leaders demanding swift action. The police stated that the investigation was ongoing, and efforts were being made to identify and apprehend the accused.
BJP MLA Lakhan Gharui reached Durgapur’s ESI Hospital to meet the survivor but was denied permission. Following this, he staged a protest outside the hospital, questioning the police’s delay in arrests. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul led a road blockade at Bhagat Singh Mor police lines in Asansol, demanding immediate action. The protests led to a heated exchange between the MLAs and the police, with Paul accusing the administration of inaction.
Police officials assured that all aspects of the case were being investigated, and necessary action would be taken. The incident has raised concerns over women’s safety, with political leaders pressing for transparency and urgency in handling the case. The protests continued as BJP leaders insisted on immediate arrests, while law enforcement maintained that the investigation was progressing.
