On Wednesday, BJP MLAs in West Bengal wore masks with a ₹500 note pasted on them during the 2023 Budget session of the Vidhan Sabha. The act was a protest against corruption and unemployment in the state, according to the lawmakers.
"Students who have cleared SSC and TET are still unemployed, and posts in many departments are vacant, but appointments are not being made," said BJP MLA Manoj Tigga. The MLAs demanded that the state government take immediate action to address these issues.
The protest comes amid a tense political climate in West Bengal, with the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP exchanging barbs over a range of issues. The BJP has been accusing the state government of corruption and mismanagement, while the Trinamool has accused the BJP of stoking communal tensions.
Despite the ongoing political tensions, the state government has announced several measures to address unemployment, including the creation of new jobs in various sectors. However, many critics have questioned the effectiveness of these measures, and the issue of unemployment remains a major concern for the people of West Bengal.
In response to the BJP's protest, the ruling Trinamool Congress accused the opposition party of grandstanding and attempting to distract from its own failures. "The BJP is always trying to create drama, but they have no real solutions to offer the people of West Bengal," said a spokesperson for the Trinamool.
