BJP MP Khagen Murmu suffers brutal head injury in an attack; TMC blamed

A fresh political storm has erupted in West Bengal after BJP MP Khagen Murmu, the two-time representative from North Malda, was allegedly attacked by local assailants while he was en route to coordinate flood relief and rescue operations in the devastated Dooars region. The shocking incident, which the BJP has fiercely condemned, has intensified the political blame game during a critical time when North Bengal is grappling with the aftermath of deadly landslides and torrential rains. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) now faces severe accusations of using violence to obstruct humanitarian aid efforts led by the opposition party.

The allegation was launched by BJP IT Department chief Amit Malviya via a post on X (formerly Twitter). According to Malviya, the incident took place near Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri's Dooars area. Murmu, a prominent tribal leader in the region, was reportedly travelling to the site of the disaster to assist residents affected by the overwhelming floods and cut-off connectivity when his convoy was targeted. The opposition party is framing the attack as a deliberate attempt to sabotage disaster response and intimidate leaders reaching out to the public.

Malviya’s criticism did not stop at the alleged attackers; he launched a direct verbal assault on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, contrasting her actions with the ground reality. The BJP leader strongly implied that while the Chief Minister was preoccupied with festivities, specifically referring to her presence at the 'Kolkata Carnival,' the state administration was "missing in action" in the face of a massive natural calamity. This political juxtaposition aims to highlight a perceived dereliction of duty by the state leadership during the ongoing tragedy.

The core of the BJP's accusation revolves around the obstruction of relief work. Malviya asserted that BJP leaders and 'karyakartas' (workers) who are actively engaging in humanitarian efforts are being "attacked for doing relief work," suggesting that the political ecosystem in West Bengal is punishing compassion. This narrative attempts to paint the TMC as an intolerant force that utilizes violence even when people's lives are at stake due to natural disasters.
