BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Soumitra Khan has expressed apprehensions of possible arrest and filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court seeking defense cover.
Khan, representing Vishnupur in Bankura, alleged that false cases were registered against him after making serious allegations against the officer in charge of Sonamukhi police station in an extortion case. He fears being arrested on the basis of these fabricated cases, which could hinder his party's campaigning for the upcoming Panchayat elections. Khan has requested immediate anticipatory bail in relation to these cases.
The petition was filed before Justice Rajasekhar Mantha on Wednesday, and the matter is scheduled for a hearing on Friday.
It is noteworthy that Soumitra Khan won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on a Trinamool Congress ticket. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019 and also won on a BJP ticket. Prior to the elections, the district police had registered cases against him. Now, several cases have been filed against Khan before the Panchayat elections, leading him to approach the High Court to avoid arrest.
