The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday announced nine candidates for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections, nominating its national president Nitin Nabin from Bihar. The announcement comes ahead of polling scheduled for March 16 to fill 37 seats across 10 States.
With vacancies arising in April, the elections will be held in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The BJP is expected to strengthen its position in the Upper House, given its governments or alliances in six of these States.
The party’s list includes two candidates each from Bihar, Assam and Odisha, and one each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana and West Bengal. The nominations signal the party’s strategic positioning ahead of the Upper House polls, where arithmetic in State Assemblies will determine the outcome.
