The Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing for a large-scale swearing-in ceremony at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on May 9 following its victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The event, scheduled on Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, will mark the party’s first government formation in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several Chief Ministers are expected to attend the programme.

Preparations at Brigade Parade Ground have intensified ahead of the ceremony, with construction work continuing across the venue since Wednesday afternoon. Three large hangars are being erected at the centre of the ground for the event. The Governor is scheduled to administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new Chief Minister and members of the cabinet from the main stage. Separate arrangements are being made for VVIP guests, cabinet members and invited dignitaries.

Twenty specially designed entrance gates are being constructed across the venue to reflect Bengal’s cultural and artistic heritage. Decorations at the venue will include symbols associated with Bengal’s folk traditions and historical personalities, including the terracotta horses of Bishnupur and portraits of Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Rabindra Sangeet is also expected to be played throughout different sections of the programme venue.

Large-scale public participation is anticipated for the swearing-in ceremony, with arrangements being made for lakhs of attendees along with nearly 1,000 invited guests. Security and logistical preparations are being coordinated for crowd management and movement inside Brigade Parade Ground. BJP leaders conducted multiple inspections at the venue on Thursday to review preparations related to infrastructure and event management.

Food stalls serving Bengali delicacies including jhalmuri, rosogolla and sandesh are also being planned as part of the event arrangements. Cultural performances featuring Chhau dance, Baul music and other folk art forms are expected to take place across different sections of the venue. Party leaders have described the ceremony as a major political and cultural event following the Assembly election results in West Bengal.
