CM Mamata pushes Aparajita Bill as TMC MPs urge President’s approval
Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections on February 5, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled the third and final segment of its manifesto, focusing on employment, welfare, and environmental improvements. Union Home Minister Amit Shah presented the comprehensive manifesto, promising a range of initiatives aimed at addressing the concerns of Delhi’s residents. A key proposal is the creation of a Workers Welfare Board that would provide gig workers with ₹10 lakh life insurance and ₹5 lakh accidental insurance. The BJP also plans to offer ₹10,000 assistance to textile workers, along with loans up to ₹3 lakh to registered workers for business growth and skill enhancement.
The BJP has committed to filling 50,000 government jobs, focusing on transparency and fair recruitment processes. Additionally, the party proposes the creation of 20 lakh self-employment opportunities across various sectors. The manifesto outlines a promise to reopen 13,000 sealed shops from the previous Delhi government’s tenure and create a legal framework for reopening them within six months. Furthermore, the BJP aims to convert 13,000 buses into electric vehicles to bolster Delhi’s green initiatives and enhance public transport infrastructure.
A central element of the manifesto is the promise to clean the Yamuna River within three years. The BJP plans to develop a riverfront similar to the Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat, which is known for its extensive redevelopment and tourism appeal. Amit Shah emphasized that the Yamuna cleanup project would be completed within three years and will be prioritized for environmental restoration, boosting both urban and ecological development.
In terms of welfare, the BJP has proposed a ₹21,000 package for pregnant women, which includes the provision of six nutrition kits. The party also promises to provide one free LPG cylinder to each woman during the festivals of Holi and Diwali, as well as a ₹500 subsidy on LPG cylinders for all Delhi residents. Moreover, the BJP plans to extend free medical treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme for senior citizens, covering medical expenses up to ₹5 lakh per person, with the Delhi government covering any additional costs above this amount.
For senior citizens and other vulnerable groups, the BJP proposes an increase in pension schemes. The monthly pension for senior citizens would be raised from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. Similarly, the pension for widows and destitute women will rise from ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per month. The BJP also plans to establish Atal Canteens in Delhi's JJ clusters, providing nutritious meals for ₹5. This initiative aims to assist the city’s underprivileged communities with affordable food options.
The manifesto also emphasizes education, with provisions for students preparing for competitive exams like the UPSC. The BJP promises ₹15,000 in financial assistance to such students. The party has also committed to providing free education from kindergarten to postgraduate levels for economically disadvantaged students in government schools. In another significant move, the BJP plans to offer full ownership rights to residents of 1,700 unauthorized colonies in Delhi, allowing them to legally buy, sell, and construct properties. Refugees living in colonies established since 1947, such as Rajendra Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, will also be granted full ownership rights.
In addition to housing and education reforms, the BJP’s manifesto includes proposals for improving law and order, enhancing healthcare services, and streamlining the city’s infrastructure. The BJP has pledged to address key civic issues like traffic congestion and pollution, focusing on both immediate relief and long-term solutions for sustainable urban growth.
