The political atmosphere in Siliguri intensified on Sunday as Bharatiya Janata Party workers staged a protest over the alleged protocol violation during the recent visit of President Droupadi Murmu to North Bengal. The demonstration was organised in front of the Gandhi statue in the city, where party supporters gathered to condemn what they described as disrespect toward the highest constitutional office in the country.
The protest was led by BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, who strongly criticised the state government over the incident. Addressing the media during the demonstration, he called the alleged lapse extremely shameful and accused the authorities of failing to maintain proper protocol during the President’s visit.
Ghosh emphasised that the President represents the entire nation and not any particular political party. He said any negligence or disrespect during such a visit cannot be accepted under any circumstances, especially when it involves the dignity of the country’s highest constitutional position.
The BJP leader also warned that the party would intensify its agitation over the issue in the coming days. According to him, the protest marks the beginning of a broader movement demanding accountability for what the party claims was a serious violation of constitutional decorum.
