Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
The political equations within Kolkata Municipal Corporation have come under renewed focus following BJP’s sweeping victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The election results from constituencies under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area have indicated significant gains for the BJP, intensifying political attention on the upcoming municipal elections expected later this year. Political discussions have also centred around the BJP’s broader “Look East” strategy following its electoral success in the state.
According to Assembly election figures from the 16 constituencies falling within the municipal corporation limits, BJP secured victory in 11 seats. Ward-level trends have also drawn attention, with BJP reportedly leading in 101 out of the 144 municipal wards, while the Trinamool Congress remained ahead in 43 wards. These figures have triggered discussions within political circles regarding changing voting patterns among urban voters in Kolkata.
BJP sources indicated that after the swearing-in ceremony scheduled at Brigade Parade Ground on May 9, the party is expected to shift focus towards the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections. Party leaders are also reportedly considering administrative decisions, including plans to move the state secretariat back from Nabanna in Howrah to the historic Writers’ Building in Kolkata. The proposed administrative shift is being viewed as an important political and symbolic development following the Assembly election results.
Within the Trinamool Congress, concerns have reportedly emerged regarding organisational challenges after the electoral setback. Party workers and councillors have allegedly expressed apprehension over public dissatisfaction related to allegations surrounding syndicate activities, extortion and local-level governance issues. Several councillors reportedly stated anonymously that morale among grassroots workers had weakened following the election outcome.
Apart from Kolkata, BJP also registered strong performances in major municipal corporation areas including Bidhannagar, Howrah, Chandannagar and Asansol. Political discussions within the Trinamool Congress have reportedly focused on organisational restructuring ahead of the civic polls. Speculation has also emerged regarding the possibility of municipal elections being advanced amid the changing political situation in the state.
