BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar addressed a member recruitment workshop in Kalna, where he proposed a new policy aimed at addressing sexual violence in West Bengal, specifically a bulldozer policy. Majumdar stated that if the BJP comes to power, the policy would involve demolishing the homes of individuals convicted of rape. He argued that this measure would act as a deterrent against sexual offenses and provide a sense of justice for victims and their families. He emphasized that under this proposed system, families of victims would not need to depend on government checks for compensation, suggesting that direct actions against perpetrators would be more effective.
During the workshop, which took place on Monday, Majumdar introduced the Annapurna project, designed to provide financial assistance to women in West Bengal. The initiative proposes to offer ₹3,000 monthly to eligible women to enhance their economic independence. He detailed the application process for this program, including necessary documentation and eligibility criteria, encouraging women to apply for the financial support to improve their livelihoods.
Majumdar's statements come against the backdrop of increasing public concern regarding violence against women in the state. Recent months have seen several high-profile cases of sexual assault and murder, which have prompted widespread calls for more effective measures from the government. He mentioned specific locations, such as Joynagar and Arjikkor, where residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the government's response to rising crime rates and the efficacy of law enforcement in addressing these serious issues.
The proposed bulldozer policy reflects similar tactics employed in other states, notably Uttar Pradesh, where bulldozers have been used to demolish properties linked to criminal activity. This approach has garnered both support and criticism for its implications regarding justice and property rights. The BJP's announcement of this policy indicates its intent to prioritize women's safety and address public concerns about crime, positioning these initiatives as central to its campaign strategy ahead of the upcoming state elections.
