Following a historic third consecutive victory in the Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP sent 1 kg of jalebis to Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s Delhi office. The move was a direct jab at Gandhi’s comments during his Gohana rally, where he praised the local Matu Ram jalebis and suggested mass production could generate jobs and boost the economy.
Gandhi’s remarks quickly became a target of ridicule from BJP leaders. Ravi Shankar Prasad mocked him, claiming Gandhi was “clueless” about how jalebis are made, while BJP shared a screenshot of the delivery, sent to 24 Akbar Road, the Congress HQ.
The celebration extended to Gujarat, where BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, held “jalebi parties.” They shared the sweet while mocking Gandhi’s employment ideas and vision for the jalebi industry.
This isn’t the first time Gohana’s famous jalebis have entered political discourse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi referenced them during a rally earlier this year, using the sweet to criticize the opposition INDIA bloc’s leadership rotation plan, asking if they thought the Prime Minister’s post was “Matu Ram ki jalebi.”
Gohana’s iconic jumbo jalebis, introduced in 1958 by Matu Ram, are renowned for their pure ghee preparation, crispy texture, and soft inside. Gandhi had praised the jalebi during his rally, calling it the best he’d ever eaten and expressing hopes to promote it globally.
