BJP sweeps Delhi MCD bypoll with 7 seats out of 12

In a nail-biting showdown that kept Delhi's political circles buzzing, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypoll results today revealed a familiar face holding strong while challengers nipped at its heels across 12 key wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sweeps seven seats, including strongholds like Shalimar Bagh-B where Anita Jain romped home by a whopping 10,101 votes, and a narrow suspense in Greater Kailash with Anjum Mandal edging out rivals by just 365 votes. This came after a dramatic shake-up earlier in the year when 16 AAP councillors jumped ship to form the Indraprastha Vikas Party, handing BJP a slim edge in the 250-seat house. But the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wasn't about to fade quietly, snagging three seats in wards like Mundka and Naraina, fueled by voter anger over local BJP lawmakers. Meanwhile, Congress notched a solid win in Sangam Vihar-A with Suresh Chaudhary's 3,268-vote margin, and in a stunning twist, the Forward Bloc broke through in Chandni Mahal, where Mohammad Imran triumphed by 4,592 votes—leaving AAP in third and BJP in second.

With BJP now at 122 seats, AAP at 102, Congress at nine, and the Forward Bloc making its MCD debut. The wins weren't without their stories of grit and grudge. In Chandni Mahal, once an AAP fortress with the biggest 2022 margin, the party tumbled to third after former leader Shoaib Iqbal bolted on November 9 over a denied Assembly ticket and threw his weight behind the Forward Bloc's underdog. BJP reclaimed Chandni Chowk with a 1,182-vote edge, but losses in Sangam Vihar-A and Mundka stung, blamed on backlash against BJP MLAs like Gajendra Daral for ignoring local woes. AAP's Naraina victory rode a wave of resentment against BJP picking an "outsider" candidate, turning what could have been a rout into a resilient rebound.

These bypolls, filling vacancies from Assembly poll winners like Rekha Gupta and Chandan Choudhary, highlighted how personal beefs and party switches can flip the script in Delhi's hyper-local battles, where potholes and power cuts often trump national noise. As the dust settles, the verdict underscores a fractured MCD landscape ahead of next year's leadership showdown—BJP's grip looks firm but fragile, needing every ally it can muster, while AAP's three gains signal they're rebuilding steam despite the defections. For residents tired of the ping-pong politics, it's a reminder that city governance hangs on these razor-thin threads, with the Forward Bloc's surprise entry adding fresh spice to the mix.
