The West Bengal Assembly witnessed high drama on Wednesday as BJP MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari, demanded an adjournment motion over the recent violence in Murshidabad, Malda, and Maheshtala. The opposition accused the state government of failing to maintain law and order and sought an immediate discussion in the House.
Raising the issue at the very start of the session, Adhikari alleged that the state was deliberately downplaying serious incidents of communal and political violence. BJP MLAs shouted slogans demanding accountability and staged a symbolic walkout when the Speaker refused to accept the motion. The ruling party, meanwhile, accused the opposition of politicising localised incidents. The Speaker urged calm and said discussions on law and order can be scheduled in due course.
