A BJP worker was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons in broad daylight in Malda’s Chanchal on Monday, triggering tension in the area and protests by party supporters and Hindu organization activists. The injured man, identified as Kiran Saha, sustained serious injuries during the assault and was admitted to hospital for treatment. Police said one accused has been detained and an investigation is underway.
According to local sources, Kiran Saha is a practicing lawyer at the Chanchal Sub-Divisional Court and is associated with the BJP and the Vishva Hindu Parishad. The incident reportedly took place on Monday morning while he was returning home from a local market. Several attackers allegedly surrounded him on the road and assaulted him repeatedly with sharp weapons. Local residents rescued him in an injured condition and first took him to Chanchal Super Speciality Hospital before he was shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.
Saha alleged that the attack was linked to previous enmity in the area. According to his statement, a few months ago he had protested against the alleged harassment of a woman and later filed a written complaint at the local police station against one Habibur Rahman. He claimed the latest assault was carried out in retaliation for that protest. Saha also alleged that the accused had the support of a police officer.
Following the incident, activists from Hindu organizations staged protests by blocking the Ashapur state highway and burning tyres on the road. A large police force led by the inspector-in-charge of the local police station later reached the area and worked to restore normalcy. Police officials said the exact motive behind the attack has not yet been conclusively established and the investigation is continuing.
