Tension briefly gripped New Town on Thursday morning after police halted a Ram Navami procession over allegations of weapons being carried, leading to a heated argument with BJP workers and organisers. The situation escalated quickly as both sides engaged in a verbal confrontation before being brought under control, allowing the procession to resume peacefully toward Dum Dum Ram Temple.
The procession, organised from New Town Ram Temple to Dum Dum Ram Temple, had drawn a large gathering of participants since early morning. BJP candidate Piyush Kanoria was present at the rally when police intervened before the march began, citing restrictions on carrying weapons during processions.
According to organisers, a weapon was being transported in a vehicle as part of traditional rituals associated with temple पूजा. However, police objected to its presence, stating that no weapons would be permitted under security guidelines. The disagreement soon turned into a sharp exchange between police personnel and BJP leaders and supporters at the site.
Speaking on the issue, Piyush Kanoria maintained that there was no intention to use any weapon during the procession and claimed it was solely meant for ritual purposes. He also alleged that the police intervention created unnecessary disruption despite the procession being peaceful in nature.
Meanwhile, similar religious processions were held across the state on the occasion of Ram Navami. BJP leader Agnimitra Paul also participated in a Kalash Yatra in Asansol, stating that her involvement in such events is a long-standing tradition and not linked to electoral considerations.
