The ceremonial inauguration of Durga Puja pandals, a symbol of WB's rich cultural heritage, is set to commence before the official start of Devi Paksha. CM Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to virtually inaugurate several puja pandals during Pitru Paksha. Simultaneously, the state BJP is determined not to be left behind, with a letter from the party requesting senior central leaders' presence at the Durga Puja pandal inaugurations. Party president J.P. Nadda is expected to visit Bengal for the occasion.
The BJP has been making strategic moves to establish its presence in Durga Puja celebrations in Kolkata and its surroundings, challenging the TMC's traditional dominance.
In 2021, then-Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the Santosh Mitra Square Puja Mandap, led by BJP councilor Sajal Ghosh in Central Kolkata. Last year, the inauguration was carried out by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikariand state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar. This year, BJP sources indicate that J.P. Nadda will inaugurate pandals and visit various places of worship in North Kolkata, although the final list of pandals is yet to be determined.
