Blasts hit key Pakistani air force sites near Islamabad, air space reportedly shut

A series of powerful explosions were reported early Saturday across several Pakistani air bases, including a strategically critical installation near the capital, Islamabad. The alarming developments prompted an immediate response from the Pakistani government, which took the significant step of shutting down the country's airspace to all civilian and commercial air traffic. Adding to the regional tension, multiple explosions were also reportedly heard in Srinagar earlier this morning, occurring just hours after India stated it had repelled Pakistani drone attacks.

The Pakistani military has since confirmed the incidents, stating that the blasts occurred at three of its air force installations. Among these is the Nur Khan Air Base in Rawalpindi, a facility of paramount importance situated less than 10 kilometres from Islamabad and in close proximity to the nation's military headquarters. Eyewitnesses in the vicinity of the affected areas described hearing loud, successive blasts which were promptly followed by a noticeable flurry of military activity on the ground as security forces responded to the unfolding situation.

The Nur Khan facility, which was formerly known as Chaklala Air Base, is recognized as one of Pakistan's most sensitive and vital military compounds. It not only houses significant air force operations but also serves as a base for VIP transport units, underscoring its strategic value. The targeting of such a key installation has raised serious concerns.

According to further statements from the Pakistani military, the other two sites impacted were the Murid air base located in Chakwal city and the Rafiqui air base in the Jhang district of Punjab province. The extent of the damage and the nature of the explosions at these three distinct locations are currently under investigation by Pakistani authorities.

In a move reflecting the heightened state of alert and escalating tensions, Pakistan officially closed its airspace for all air traffic. This decision was communicated through a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). The closure came just hours after India had accused Pakistan of employing commercial flights as shields during alleged drone attacks, a claim that adds another layer of complexity to the already strained relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
