Fresh tensions erupted in Kolkata today in front of the office of the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The escalation was triggered by a march organised by the 'BLO Adhikar Raksha Committee' (BLO Rights Protection Committee) on Thursday, demanding financial assistance for the families of deceased Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and an extension of the ongoing work deadline, among other grievances.
The march saw the participation of family members of the BLOs who reportedly died recently due to the unbearable stress and pressure of work. However, the situation quickly became heated when the police intercepted the procession, attempting to prevent them from reaching the CEO's office.
Allegations have been made that the protesting BLOs attempted to forcefully break through the police barricades to enter the CEO's office, transforming the entire area into a conflict zone. The protesters maintained that they had sought a prior appointment with the Chief Electoral Officer, yet were still being blocked by the police.
