A 35-year-old driver was found dead in a drain on Dharmatala Road under the Malipanchghara police station limits in Howrah on Wednesday morning, triggering panic among local residents. The deceased has been identified as Vivek Kumar Pandey, a native of Bihar, who had reportedly been missing since the previous night.
According to family members, efforts were underway to trace him when locals spotted him lying unconscious in the drain and alerted the police. Officers reached the spot, recovered the body, and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased was often seen in the area under the influence of alcohol, raising suspicion that he may have accidentally fallen into the drain. However, police said all angles are being examined, with CCTV footage under scrutiny and the body sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death.
