NIA searches Saokat Molla’s home and party office, son questioned in Bhangar blast case
A bomb explosion at the house of a Congress worker in Farakka, Murshidabad, triggered panic in the area on Monday morning, with the main accused arrested from Jharkhand within 12 hours. The blast occurred in the Nayansukh Maniknagar area under Farakka police station, where explosives allegedly stored on the rooftop suddenly detonated, partially collapsing the boundary wall. No casualties were reported, but the incident created widespread tension just days before polling.
According to local accounts, masons were working on the roof at the time when the explosion took place. Eyewitnesses claimed that bombs had already been kept in one corner of the roof, which suddenly went off with a loud blast, shaking the surrounding area and forcing residents to run in panic. The intensity of the explosion raised immediate concerns over the presence of explosives in a residential zone.
Police, led by the officer-in-charge of Farakka police station along with central forces, rushed to the spot soon after the incident and brought the situation under control. By the time security personnel arrived, the main accused Saimul Sheikh and his family members had reportedly fled the area. Initial detentions were made, but two individuals were later released after questioning.
Acting swiftly, police tracked down and arrested Saimul Sheikh from Pakur in Jharkhand within about 12 hours of the incident. He was produced before the Jangipur court on Tuesday, where investigators sought seven days of police custody. Officials believe his interrogation will help uncover the motive behind storing the explosives and determine whether a larger conspiracy was involved. The investigation is ongoing.
The incident has also triggered sharp political reactions. Allegations and counter-allegations have emerged between political parties, with claims ranging from attempts to create election-related terror to suggestions of a staged incident. The blast, occurring just days before polling, has intensified the political atmosphere in the region.
