Panic spread in Deganga on Wednesday morning after a suspicious sweet box left outside TMC Panchayat Chief Bappa Mandal’s house was found containing two live bombs. The package, wrapped in colorful paper, was discovered by family members, who became suspicious and opened it. Upon finding the explosives, they alerted the police, who immediately secured the area and launched an investigation.
Security personnel and forensic experts arrived at the scene to examine the explosives, while bomb disposal squads ensured safety measures. Police have begun scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and questioning locals to identify the sender. Mandal has alleged that the incident could be politically motivated, stating, "Such attempts will not intimidate me." Authorities are also investigating possible links to past similar incidents and any local disputes that may have led to the attack.
The discovery has revived memories of the ‘parcel bomb culture’ of the 1990s, when several attacks across Bengal involved explosives sent through mail. In one such case, a schoolteacher in Malda was killed after opening a bomb-laden package. Law enforcement officials have assured that all angles are being investigated and that those responsible will be identified soon. Security has been heightened in the area to prevent any further incidents.
