Malda is in mourning following the sudden death of Utpal Thokdar, 54, who served as a Booth Level Officer (BLO) at Booth No. 93 in Nadapara, Chandrapada Gram Panchayat, under Chanchal-2 Block. Thokdar, a teacher by profession, was rushed to Chanchal Super Specialty Hospital on Saturday night after complaining of chest pain and passed away later that night.
Thokdar’s wife, Shubhra Thokdar, alleged that immense mental stress contributed to her husband’s untimely demise. As the sole earning member of the family, his death has left them in a difficult financial situation. She has appealed to the government for assistance and requested that a family member be provided with employment support. The sudden death has cast a deep pall of gloom over the local community, with colleagues and residents expressing shock and grief. Thokdar was widely respected for his dedication both as a teacher and as a BLO, actively serving the community in multiple capacities.
This incident has also reignited discussion about the increasing workload and pressures on government employees. Many in the region have called for measures to ensure better mental health support and work-life balance for officials entrusted with public service responsibilities.
