Muzaffarpur hospital blaze kills 3 patients, leaves 20 injured
A young bride’s unnatural death led to major unrest in Chunchura’s Kapasdanga on Sunday, after the family of Moumita Chakraborty alleged that she had been subjected to relentless torture by her in-laws over dowry demands. Moumita, originally from Sankrail in Howrah, married Dipankar Banerjee nearly three years ago and had reportedly returned to her parental home several times due to abuse.
According to her family, Dipankar repeatedly brought her back to Kapasdanga, assuring that the situation would improve, but the harassment reportedly continued unabated. Moumita last spoke to her father around midnight, and by early morning, the family received word that she had died by hanging inside her marital home.
The news triggered outrage, with residents from Sankrail reaching Kapasdanga and vandalising the in-laws’ house. Relatives alleged that Moumita was tortured physically and mentally over property, debt-related disputes, and other demands. They also claimed they later learned that this was Dipankar’s fourth marriage, further deepening suspicion.
Following reports of violence, teams from Bandel and Chunchura police stations arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control. Police have begun an inquiry into the circumstances of the death and the allegations made by the bride’s family.
