Troops of the Border Security Force (BSF) have successfully thwarted a major smuggling attempt in West Bengal's Nadia district. On December 30, acting on specific intelligence inputs, personnel from the 32nd Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier apprehended a suspicious individual near the Uttarpara Gede village, located close to the Indo-Bangladesh International Border. During a thorough search of the suspect, jawans discovered six gold biscuits concealed with him.
The recovered gold, weighing approximately 700 grams, is estimated to have a market value of around ₹1 crore. The swift action by the border guards prevented the precious metal from entering the illegal domestic market. The BSF has intensified its vigil along the frontier during the year-end period, as smugglers often try to take advantage of the dense winter fog and festive distractions.
During the preliminary interrogation, the arrested individual confessed to his involvement in the smuggling racket. He admitted that the gold had been handed over to him by a Bangladeshi smuggler across the fence. His task was to transport the consignment safely to another local smuggler on the Indian side for a commissioned payout. Following the seizure, the apprehended person and the recovered gold were handed over to the Customs Department for further legal proceedings.
