The Kolkata Municipal Corporation launched a major eviction drive near the Garia Mahashmashan to remove illegal encroachments from government land. Acting under the state government’s ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy against unauthorized occupation, civic officials arrived at the site in the morning along with a large police contingent. Bulldozers were deployed during the operation to demolish permanent and temporary structures allegedly constructed illegally on government property adjacent to the crematorium area.
According to officials, several individuals had been occupying the land for years and conducting commercial activities by operating shops and stalls from the site. Under strict security arrangements, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation carried out demolition operations and cleared the entire area surrounding the Garia Mahashmashan. Police personnel remained deployed throughout the operation to maintain law and order during the eviction process.
