A devastating accident occurred in Deragaon, Assam, on Wednesday morning as a bus carrying 45 passengers collided with a truck, resulting in a tragic loss of at least 14 lives, with 27 individuals reported to be seriously injured. The collision took place as the bus, en route from Athkhelia to Balijan for a picnic party, collided with a coal-loaded truck.
The incident unfolded on the four-lane highway, where the truck, reportedly traveling in the wrong direction due to a damaged part, collided with the bus in the right lane. The collision occurred amidst foggy conditions, and both vehicles were reportedly traveling at high speeds.
Authorities responded swiftly to the accident, with police and rescue teams reaching the scene promptly. The injured individuals were rushed to Jorhat Medical College, where many remain in critical condition. An ongoing police investigation aims to determine the sequence of events leading to the tragic collision.
President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their condolences on social media, expressing deep sadness over the sudden loss of lives. PM Modi announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
