The Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari addressed a press conference after holding a meeting with senior BSF officers, stating that land has been handed over for fencing along the India–Bangladesh border. He said the development marks an important step in border security measures and that a “patriotic government” has begun its work after the previous administration did not provide land for the project.
Suvendu Adhikari stated that 27 kilometres of land has been handed over to the BSF for barbed wire fencing. He said the India–Bangladesh border is approximately 2,200 kilometres long, of which 1,600 kilometres has already been fenced, and completing fencing of the remaining stretch would strengthen border control.
He alleged that earlier there were issues of illegal infiltration, trafficking, and other unlawful activities along the border, which were not addressed by the previous government. He further stated that with the fencing project, such activities would be brought under control and illegal entry into the state would be prevented.
The Chief Minister also said that responsibility for securing the 27-kilometre stretch has been jointly taken by the state government and the BSF. He added that security review meetings have been held across multiple districts including Darjeeling, Siliguri, South Dinajpur, Islampur, Jangipur, and Malda, and such meetings will continue. He further stated that procedures under the CAA framework and border protocols have been implemented for handling illegal entrants.
