CM Mamata to visit Darjeeling ahead of bypolls, key GTA meeting on cards
On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court admitted a petition regarding an alleged attack on a “Reclaim the Night” protest, organized in response to the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in August. The protest aimed to highlight issues surrounding women's safety and demand justice for the victim.
A single-judge bench of Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj admitted the petition, with a hearing expected to take place on Friday. The petitioner alleged that the attack occurred on October 1, during a protest held in the Tollygunge area of South Kolkata, where local Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists, led by Ward 115 councilor Ratna Sur, assaulted the protesters, many of whom were women.
The protest was part of a broader movement involving several rallies and demonstrations across Kolkata. However, the petitioner claimed that despite the violent attack happening in the presence of police officers, they did not intervene and later refused to register any complaints against the attackers.
Ratna Sur, the accused TMC councilor, has denied the allegations, stating that her associates were provoked by the protesters, who allegedly used abusive language. She also claimed that some of her supporters were injured during the confrontation.
