Sujoy Krishna Bhadra, famously called ‘Kalighater Kaku’, can finally breathe free air after the Calcutta High Court granted him bail today in Bengal teachers’ recruitment scam case. The close aide of top political leaders had been behind bars since 2023 when ED first arrested him, followed by CBI in the same matter. Sujoy was released on interim bail in February on the orders of the court. He remained practically under house arrest under the siege of the central forces, in compliance with the bail conditions granted by the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Subhra Ghosh approved the bail today with several clear conditions to make sure he does not run away or spoil evidence. Kalighater Kaku cannot step outside Kolkata, has to surrender his passport, report to the investigating officer once every week and keep his phone number shared with police and court. The judge warned that if he breaks any rule or tries to change case documents, the lower court can cancel his bail instantly.
Reportedly, as a condition of his interim bail, Sujoy Krishna had been under virtual house arrest in his Behala home for the past ten months, surrounded by central forces. He was not allowed to meet anyone outside. Earlier, he had approached the High Court to get his house arrest lifted and be released on permanent bail. But the CBI opposed his bail. The CBI also provided information to the High Court regarding Sujoy Krishna's 'role' in the primary teachers' recruitment case.
