The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted Trinamool Congress state general secretary Kunal Ghosh exemption from regular personal appearances in a contempt of court case related to protests inside the court premises. The matter was heard before a special three-judge bench, and Ghosh was present during the proceedings.
The contempt case pertains to a protest held by candidates of physical education and work education subjects under the State Level Selection Test (SLST) in the court premises. Following the incident, the High Court had issued a contempt notice against Kunal Ghosh. Monday marked the first day of hearing in the matter.
An affidavit concerning the use of Ghosh’s name was filed in court. Representing Ghosh, senior advocate and MP Kalyan Banerjee argued that the special bench hearing the matter did not have the authority to issue contempt rules in the absence of a written order from the Chief Justice. He stated, “If I have made any error, I offer an unconditional apology.” Advocates Ayan Chakraborty and Rahul Mishra also appeared on behalf of Ghosh.
The bench clarified that Ghosh is no longer required to appear in person for every hearing and would be summoned only if necessary. The court noted that further arguments on behalf of Ghosh are still pending. The next hearing has been scheduled for Monday, June 30.
Speaking after the hearing, Kunal Ghosh said, “This contempt case was a result of efforts by leftist, BJP, and Congress-affiliated lawyers, which led to the issuance of the rule. I have complied with all court orders and respect the High Court. The special bench has granted me relief from personal appearance.”
