The Calcutta High Court has issued strong advance directions to ensure peace and law and order during Saraswati Puja celebrations at Jadavpur University. A division bench headed by Chief Justice Sujoy Pal stressed that strict security arrangements must be in place to prevent any untoward incident on the campus.
During the hearing, the court observed that maintaining law and order within the university premises is primarily the responsibility of the university authorities. However, it made it clear that the state and local police must extend full support whenever required, warning that any negligence in ensuring security would not be tolerated.
The state’s counsel submitted that Jadavpur University has witnessed incidents of unrest during Saraswati Puja in previous years, and there is apprehension of similar disturbances this year as well. The court was informed that a large number of outsiders visit the campus during the festival, making advance security planning essential.
The division bench directed that the Jadavpur police station will be responsible for maintaining security on the day of Saraswati Puja. The state has been instructed to ensure complete security arrangements, while the university must coordinate closely with the police to prevent any breach of peace.
The university authorities also informed the court that steps are being taken to strengthen campus security, including the installation of CCTV cameras through WEBEL. The High Court has asked the university to submit a progress report on the security-related work within ten days, while the authorities assured that the installation would be completed within four weeks.
