The Calcutta High Court has dismissed the petition filed by Indian Secular Front (ISF) MLA Naushad Siddiqui, seeking the West Bengal panchayat elections to be held in multiple phases.
Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam stated that another similar petition is already pending before a different judge's bench, and therefore, the current bench will not hear it.
Naushad had filed the plea citing concerns about the security of the panchayat elections due to the widespread violence that occurred during the nomination process.
Additionally, he pointed out that the deployment of an adequate number of central forces across the state's 83,000 polling booths is lacking.
Naushad expressed a lack of trust in the local police and argued that conducting the elections in multiple phases would ensure better security, rather than attempting to manage it on a single day throughout the entire state.
However, the court mentioned that a similar petition is scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, and thus, Naushad's plea has been rejected temporarily.
