Calcutta HC seeks Centre's response over Bengali migrants harassment row, hearing next week

The Calcutta High Court has expressed grave concern over the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking individuals in BJP-ruled states, taking serious note of the matter. Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty has specifically questioned why people speaking Bengali are reportedly being expelled or discriminated against in these states, and has sought a response from the central government regarding these disturbing allegations.

This intervention by the High Court underscores the growing judicial attention to issues of linguistic and regional discrimination within the country. The court has scheduled the next hearing for this case for July 23 at 2 PM.

It is on this date that the central government is expected to provide its response to the questions raised by Justice Chakraborty regarding the alleged mistreatment of Bengali speakers. This timeline sets a clear deadline for the Centre to address the court's concerns and clarify its stance on the matter.

Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday took out a mega rally against the alleged discrimination against the Bengali migrant workers. She, along with senior party leaders like Abhishek Banerjee, Firhad Hakim, walked from College Square to Dorina Crossing.
