Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
The Calcutta High Court on Friday sought a detailed report from the police over the alleged harassment of Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and underlined that his security cannot be compromised under any circumstances. Hearing a petition moved by Adhikari following the February 24 incident, the Division Bench led by the Chief Justice reiterated that ensuring the safety of the Leader of Opposition is the responsibility of the authorities. The matter has been posted for further hearing on March 5.
During the proceedings, Adhikari’s counsel raised serious questions about the role of the Election Commission, asking how protests and even alleged shoe-throwing could take place outside the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, considered a highly sensitive location. The lawyer sought the court’s intervention to ensure that no protests or gatherings be permitted within a 200-metre radius of the Commission’s office, especially when prior restrictions and security measures were reportedly in place.
Representing the state, government lawyers informed the court that an investigation into the incident is underway and assured that a comprehensive report would be submitted. However, they sought time until March 5 to place the findings on record. After hearing both sides, the court granted the request while making it clear that the security of the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly must remain intact.
The controversy stems from events on February 24, when Adhikari allegedly faced obstruction while proceeding to the CEO’s office. Protesters reportedly surrounded him, and allegations were made that shoes were thrown in his direction. Adhikari claimed that despite the presence of police personnel, no effective action was taken at the time.
Following the incident, he approached the High Court seeking judicial intervention. The court had earlier directed senior police officials to remain vigilant regarding his security. With the latest order, focus now shifts to the police investigation and the report expected to be submitted before the next hearing.
