Calcutta HC slams State Intelligence over Education Minister's case, seeks report on JU unrest

The Calcutta High Court has stated that the harassment incident involving the state's Education Minister, Bratya Basu, and the subsequent unrest at Jadavpur University highlight the failure of the state police’s intelligence department. The High Court believes that such a role of the intelligence department could lead to even worse incidents in the future.

On Wednesday, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh remarked, "Such a major incident is enough for the Special Branch to learn a lesson." The judge questioned, "How did such a large crowd gather around the state's Education Minister?" If intelligence agencies fail, the situation in the coming days could resemble that of neighboring countries. Such a situation cannot be allowed. If the police intelligence failed to detect that crowd, even worse conditions could arise in the future."

A total of seven FIRs have been filed in connection with the Jadavpur incident, but the police are not acting on complaints filed by the left-wing student organization. The court stated that the police must register an FIR based on the complainant’s report as well. In this matter, the High Court has sought a report from the state on the Jadavpur incident. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 12.
