A shocking incident took place on the night of Holi in Salt Lake. A murder occurred at the house of late footballer PK Banerjee. His driver has been accused of killing house servant Gopinath with a sharp weapon during an alcohol-fueled party. Following a complaint, Bidhannagar South Police Station arrested the driver. The arrested driver has been identified as Varun Ghosh, who is accused of murdering Gopinath. This incident happened on Friday night.
The late footballer’s two daughters currently reside in the Salt Lake house. It has been learned that one of his daughters had recently returned from Thailand. On Friday, she complained that ₹5,000 was stolen from her purse. Upon discovering this, she called five household staff members, including the driver, to her home the same day and questioned them. This is where the argument began.
According to police sources, driver Varun Ghosh repeatedly pointed fingers at attendant Gopinath, accusing him of taking the money. He kept saying, "You took the money." Gopinath strongly objected to this accusation. Later that night, when an alcohol party was underway in front of the house, the argument escalated. Allegedly, in a fit of rage, Varun picked up a sharp weapon from the kitchen and attacked Gopinath mercilessly.
Gopinath was found covered in blood and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police arrested Varun on Saturday morning and have been present at the crime scene since then. Forensic teams have collected samples from the spot, and statements from other staff members are being recorded. Authorities are investigating whether there was any other motive behind the murder.
